Facts About Storms and Rainfalls

Rainfall intensity:
LIGHT (<2.5mm/hr);
MODERATE (2.5 to 7.5mm/hr);
HEAVY (>7.5mm/hr)

Tropical Depression = maximum sustained winds 55 to 63kph;
Tropical Storm = 64 to 118kph;
Typhoon = >118kph.

As long as life,property and livelihood are not affected, they are called HAZARDS.

Landsliding is the layman's term for mass wasting.

Storm surge and tsunami both result into high waves. But they are different.

A storm surge is related to a tropical cyclone whereas a tsunami is generated by submarine earthquakes.

Public Storm Signal Warnings;

#1: winds of 30-60kph may be expected in at least 36hours or intermittent rains may be expected within 36 hours.
#2: Winds of greater than 60kph and up to 100kph may be expected in at least 24 hours.
#3: Winds of greater than 100kph up to 185kph may be expected in at least 18 hours.
#4: Very strong winds of more than 185kph may be expected in at least 12 hours.

  • When Signal No. 1 is raised by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical & Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), classes at the preschool level shall be automatically suspended in all public and private schools.
  • When Signal No. 2 is raised, classes at the preschool, elementary, and secondary levels shall be automatically suspended in all public and private schools.
  • When Signal No. 3 is raised, classes in all levels are automatically suspended.
